Can Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter be used along with a USB-C to USB-A cable?

I use the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter to connect my ipad air (4th gen) to my tv via an hdmi cable. I need to charge my ipad simultaneously, and tried a USB-C to USB-A cable to connect this Multiport Adapter to a power source, but it doesn't charge my ipad at all. Displaying Zoom on my tv from my ipad uses too much battery.

I need to keep my ipad powered up while I use it to stream a Zoom meeting to my tv.

You have to use a USB-C to USB-C cable and use the USB-C port on the adapter.
