How to change the finder from displaying mp4 as a generic icon? The way to display properly is to force quit the finder, until the next restart. I am just a little tired of doing it all the time.
I deleted finder preference files did not help.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

To verify, does this behavior occur with all MP4 files, or only some files?
Are you still able to open those files without any issues when this behavior occurs?
Also, is your Mac all up to date? Update macOS on Mac

Does that behavior still persist if you boot your Mac into safe mode per the steps in this article? How to use safe mode on your Mac
It can take a few extra minutes to boot into safe mode. Your screen may flash or flicker while in safe mode. Those behaviors are expected. Testing in safe mode can help isolate conflicts with startup items and cached files. Once you’ve had the chance to test that, you can restart to leave safe mode.

There are 2 ways to display the movie icon as nongeneric
A. force quit the finder,
B. Rename the extension from mp4 to MP4

I created a new admin (with all the setups) Nothing showed up on my desktop, but after restarting all the preview thumbnails appeared nongeneric.
Great to hear I guess, does that mean your original account is OK now?
It looks OK, this morning.
