Photos app - duplicate 1 photo

I've tried duplicating a photo in the Photos app with no success. I have a photo I would like to crop, but also keep the original. Nothing happens when I select DUPLICATE 1 PHOTO so in desperation I read the Photos help instructions (carefully!). I selected DUPLICATE 1 PHOTO and edited the photo, but when selecting SHOW PHOTO WITHOUT ADJUSTMENTS nothing happens. I apparently should be able to see the original side by side with the edited version, but nothing. I would appreciate any assistance, thanks

If you are viewing thumbnails, then duplicate one of the images, the thumbnail of the duplicate should appear next to the thumbnail of the original.

You can then open the duplicate for editing - do whatever you like, and the original will remain unchanged.

There is no way to view two images side by side in the photos app, except as thumbnails.

Cropping is not treated as an adjustment, which may be confusing.

The button "Show without adjustments" will show you the the photo without the adjustments (like lighting, sharpening, etc) applied, while you hold down this button, so you can compare the adjustment effects. But the cropping will stay the same, to make it easier to compare the adjustments. You do not need to duplicate the photo to save the original, Photos is always keeping the original. You only need to duplicate the photo, if you want have two differently adjusted photos, for example a black-and-white version and a color version.

To compare the cropping you need indeed to duplicate the photo and then compare the thumbnails, as Tony explained; set the scale slider to the maximum scale.

My problem was solved when I realized one must be viewing thumbnails in the Photos library when duplicating an image. I had image open full size and when I hit duplicate, nothing happened. Community replied that when viewing thumbnails the duplicate appears right next to the original and can then be opened and edited. Simple solution, I hope this answers your question too
