23.7-inch LG UltraFine 4K Display wont display instantly with Macbook pro or iPadPro. Please help!

23.7-inch LG UltraFine 4K Display won't display instantly when connected to Macbook pro (2017 running Monterey 12.1) via thunderbolt. If I switch the monitor off at the power point then plug it into the computer it works. But it is highly inconvenient crawling under the desk every time I need to use the monitor. Also, I can't get the iPadPro to connect at all (tried thuderbolt and USB C).

Very disappointed as I spent the extra cash to buy a product endorsed by Apple to avoid incompatibility issues.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.1

to get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• on invoking Option-(Detect Display) button in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

Update: After the computer has been asleep for a while, simply plugging the thunderbolt back in (or forcing sleep then wake up) won't activate the monitor. Option-(Detect Display) doesn't work either unless the monitor has recently been active. So I'm back to flicking the switch at the wall :(

Thanks! All of the above are working now. Strange, as plugging the mac end into the ('ready to go') mac did not work previously. Any tips for ipad pro connection?

Are you using the USB-C cable to make this connection to the iPad? the iPad does not support ThunderBolt.

Yes, USB-C. Flicking the power switch for the monitor doesn't even work for the ipad. Might try a firmware update.
