Slow Download but Fast Upload Speed

Hey all,

I am running speed tests on my MacBook Pro to see if I can WFH. I have ATT Fiber at 1GB in Dallas. Running an Ethernet from my router, I’m clocking around 23Mbps download and 635Mbps upload. On other devices it is different. (my wife’s iMac is registering 570Mbps download and 860Mbps upload)

first, why the lower speed for downloads?

second, why the drastic difference between the two?

background:

-iMac is 2017 and MacBook Pro is 2012.

-used same Ethernet cable and connection

-MacBook Pro has not been used much over the last few years. Cleared off most of the apps, just trying to get it functional again. Only using half the 500GB hard drive and using 2.4 of the 4GB of RAM. (lots of application memory stored here so would love to cleared that cleared out as well, but that’s a different issue)

Hey Lissy_12,

I appreciate the link for helping the laptop run quicker. My question was mainly focused on the actual internet speeds of the device, rather than the computing speed itself. I have already tried most of your suggestions but will go back over those.

Any input you have on why the internet speed is down would be great!
