Copying multiple cells results in one cell

I want to combine the data in two separate spreadsheets. I copied the desired cells in Spreadsheet A but when I pasted in Spreadsheet B all the data was in one huge cell. Same thing if I highlight by rows or columns. What's going on?

I suspect you clicked once too often on the cell expected to receive the first copied value.

Select the desired cells in the source document.

Copy.

Click ONCE on the cell in which the first piece of copied data is to be placed.

Paste.

What went wrong:

The first click on a cell selects that cell.

A second click on the same cell places the insertion point in that cell.
