Macos not updated after a successful installation

I update macos to Monterey successfully without getting any errors.

I restart it after as that is part of the installation procedure.

When I later go to About This Mac it says there has been no new installation and I still need to update the software to Monterey.

I've done this twice already and the installation doesn't seem to be going through.

I'm also not receiving any errors during the installation.

I don't know why this is happening.

What model and year Mac? What is present macOS version

Do you have enough free disk space?

If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac needs 26GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac needs up to 44GB of available storage.

Also uninstall any antivirus and "cleaning" apps before trying installing again.

Further, you need an Apple disk installed to upgrade to Monterey since the upgrade includes an update to the Mac's firmware. That update looks for an Apple disk and write to the dick to do the firmware update. The install will terminate or freeze if no Apple disk.

Do you have Fusion drive? Some uses have problems upgrading Macs with Fusion drives.

If not then boot to Recovery and repair/First Aid the startup disk. You can't repair/First Aid the disk you booted from.

If disk OK then delete the existing Monterey installer and boot to Safe Mode, which takes minutes and redownload the installer and try again.

Some users have problem with skipping upgrade versions and even not updating to the latest version of Big Sur.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

macOS Big Sur

Version 11.6

I have over 200gb storage left

I have a SSD

The SSD drive had to be replaced about a year ago - maybe that's the issue?

The Install never terminates or freezes. It doesn't give me an error either.

After the installation it asks me to restart the computer.

I then restart the computer and then I check and it looks like it was never installed in the first place.

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original internal drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

The possible solution is to flip out the After Market Drive for an Apple Original Drive and apply the Monterey upGrade to that drive. The reverse the actions and put the After Market Drive back in and again Apple the Monterey upGrade to that drive . It should according to reliable Reports upgrade to Monterey.

The above Method and Credit for this is from more learned colleague @lllaass
