Splitting Up Apple Account or ID

My wife and I have shared the same Apple Account for years and it was fine. But over the past 2-3 years with the iPhones, the Apple Watches, and my iPad all linked it has been getting very confusing. When she gets a call at home it shows on my Apple Watch and my iPad. If she or I download an app we both get the app. My iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad all have her name in the settings section. For a while our walking data was getting mixed up too.

I would like have my wife keep the present Apple ID or account and create a new one for myself. I would like to keep my apps and contacts but we want share the Apple account for purchases. Is this possible and how can it be done?

Would I just be better to go to the Apple Store and make an appointment at the Genius Bar? Thanks 😊

Hi Richard Declue,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help setting up your own Apple ID.

As you have found, several issues can arise sharing an Apple ID. You may find this article helpful: How to create a new Apple ID.

You'll also want to sign out of your devices: Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac.

Please note:

"When you sign out, any data stored in iCloud will be removed from your device but will remain in iCloud. Before you sign out, you’ll be asked if you want to keep a copy of any of this information on your device."

You should be able to store that data in your new iCloud account. Just in case there is any data loss, you may want to Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud

So you won't lose purchased content, setting up Family Sharing would be a good step: Set up Family Sharing.

You can also share Apple subscriptions: Add a family member to your subscriptions from Apple.

Have a fantastic day!
