An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) or an iPad except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. See the following for more information: Bluetooth: Why can't I pair my iPhone or … - Apple Community

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity or AirDrop, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204681

This is not true. I have done Airdrop many times in the past but it doesn't work now. I keep getting, "XX Macbook Air is not supported". This error is Apple's.

Yes, yes, iphone is close by and software is updated. Gone through "forget device" etc. etc. etc. Have no idea where the "bluetooth menu" is on my phone, though. I don't think I have one.

The only thing I said about AirDrop was:

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity or AirDrop, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other.

and that is true.

The option to turn Bluetooth on is (or should be) at Settings > Bluetooth. It needs to be on but the devices are not Bluetooth paired. Also see other instructions in How to use AirDrop on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
