Are we serious? I have to abandon my 3000 song iTunes library and pay for Apple Music just to play a song for an alarm on my home pod...really? Does this bother anybody else.

You would typically add Apple Music features onto your existing library, but yes, Apple are serious. Some HomePod features require an Apple Music subscription. Custom alarms is one of them.
