Splitting a drawing in Keynote on a Mac

With Keynote on an iPad, I can split apart a drawing into pieces, so that I can manipulate or animate each piece separately. I can't find how to do the same on a Mac. I am running Keynote 11.2 on an iMac MacOS 12.1. I seem to remember that it was possible on earlier versions of Keynote/MacOS, but perhaps that is a false memory.

Any ideas? (Aside from copying my presentation to iPad, splitting it, and copying it back!)

  1. Click the composite shape to select it
  2. Choose: Format > Shapes and Lines > Break Apart
  3. The selection handles will show the individual parts
  4. If Break Apart is dimmed in the menu, the shape you selected isn’t a compound shape
