Have a late 2009 iMac with mini display ports (Yosemite) and a 2015 iMac with Thunderbolts (Big Sur). Is there an easy way to connect the two so I can use the 2009 iMac as an extended display for the 2015?

Nope, the 2015 is too new. No retina display iMacs will do Target Display Mode per the link.

So I would have to find a monitor that connects via mini display port or thunderbolt? I tried a mdp to hdmi adaptor in the iMac to another monitor but it would not work...
