Photo metadata stripped if stored in iCloud

If I look at the "Info" of a photo stored in iPhotos in iCloud, I can see the correct and appropriate metadata for it. If I try to move that file to my local storage device, the information normally associated with photos (Date, F-stop, aperture, location, etc.,) has disappeared, and the date of creation is shown as the date it was last downloaded, not created. Any solutions for getting my photos off of iCloud while maintaining the metadata? I figure this is probably some setting I have not navigated properly, so any help would be great!

How are you looking at the metadata when you've downloaded from iCloud? It is not visible in finder. You have to open the image in preview, then tools>show inspector

Then look in the General, Exif and TIFF tabs.

- or look with some other image metadata aware app.
