Monterey install issues

I just "updated" from High Sierra to Monterey, not knowing it was an "upgrade." Now my MacBook Air is not allowing me to enter my Apple ID, therefore I am not able to access System Preferences. Please advise.

Good news ... after about 60 minutes it let me enter my Apple ID. Yay!
