I have a 5k iMac and would like to get a supped up M1 or M2 mac mini when they come out and wonder if I could use Universal Control to use my iMac as a screen for the mac mini? Would there be lag issues? What other issue might there be?

You should be able to screen share from the iMac to the Mac mini. Suggest an ethernet connection for both machines to reduce lag. See How to set up your new Mac mini for use without a monitor.

Apple hasn’t released Universal Control, so I’m not sure anyone would have any idea on that.
However, I don’t think UC is screen sharing. It allows use of one keyboard & mouse/Trackpad to interact with another nearby Mac.
Barney is correct. Universal Control and Screen Sharing are two different things. To AirPlay from a Mac mini to an iMac, the iMac has to be from 2019 or later.
Thanks for the info. Looks like ethernet is the way to go. Now to wait for the M2 turbo mac mini to come out.
