Ipad Magic Keyboard - Stop/Start Video with Space Bar

With videos in the Photos App, the ability to start and stop videos using the Magic Keyboard space bar stopped working a few months ago for no obvious reason. At the moment, pressing the space bar closes videos in the Photos App on my Ipad. Is there any solution to change the video functionality of the space bar?


I note that this same situation exists with a variety of other video apps I have downloaded. However, the space bar is working to stop/start videos on AppleTV and YouTube.


Thanks for any help with this!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. Check your keyboard shortcuts using the steps in this article: Learn iPad keyboard shortcuts 


You may want to try turning off Full Keyboard Access or turning on to see if that helps. When using the full keyboard, the space bar is used to "Activate". You may need to change the command for the Space Bar under these settings.


Also, confirm the keyboard shortcuts for the apps in question: Use shortcuts on an Apple external keyboard with iPad


  • "View shortcuts for the app you’re using: Press and hold the Command key, then tap categories below the list.

You can change the actions that are performed by the Command key (and other modifier keys like Caps Lock). Go to Settings  > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard, tap Modifier Keys, tap a key, then choose the action you want it to perform.

To use additional keyboard shortcuts, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access, then turn on Full Keyboard Access. See Control iPad with an external keyboard."
