Mail preview pane spacing is overly wide

I upgraded to Monterey and am finding several issues with Mail. One is that the 'top' (preview) area is spaced wider than it was in Mojave or High Sierra. I've attached a side-by-side pair of screenshots, for comparison.

Is there a setting that I'm missing that governs the spacing? Like everyone, I receive a 'ton' of emails daily -- I would really appreciate the old, more-compact view. Is that possible??

We appreciate the additional information, keriah.

In that case, since only the columns are adjustable, we'd recommend providing feedback to Apple regarding this using: Product Feedback

Hey there, keriah!

We appreciate you reaching out on Apple Support Communities. From our understanding, you’d like to customize the layout of the Mail app on your Mac, is that correct? Let’s look into this together.

Use column layout in Mail on Mac - Apple Support goes over the options you have available to help customize the Mail app to your preferences. If you’d like to shorten a column, you can hover the mouse over the column break in the heading. Upon doing so, you should see your cursor change to two arrows going in opposite directions. Hold down the left mouse button, and drag the icon in the direction you choose, which will either shorten the column length or elongate it.

Let us know if that helps.

Kindest regards!

Howdy, ManJor,

Indeed, I already know those tricks for moving around (and sizing) the columns in the list view. What I'm talking about is the row spacing - please see the screenshot in my original post. On the left is the 'legacy' view of my Mail list (in a previous OS), with the rows very compact. On the right is the view I'm finding in Monterey: a lot of extra white-space between the rows. I want to reduce the amount of white-space between the rows so that the list is like it was in earlier revs. of Mail.

Is that doable???
