M1 Macbook overheating after Monterey update

Hey all,

I have a 2020 M1 macbook air which has been running like a dream for the last 14 months or so.

Just this week I upgraded my software to the latest release (macOS Monterey 12.2.1) and immediately since then my air has been overheating.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I have not changed my usage at all so the load is the same as it was before. The only thing which has changed is the software.

I use my machine for code editing and I often have a localhost server running somewhere, video meetings, video streaming and browsing the web (with chrome). During video meeting it gets the hottest but right now I am just using chrome and vscode and my palms are still sweaty typing this... should I downgrade my software to an earlier release?

:(

p.s. for any web developers out there, there is one other odd thing I noticed: localhost:5000 is not longer available for me. It seems something is now using that port and that was not the case previously.

I updated to Monterey on my 2019 MB Pro (2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7) a month or so ago, encountered the issue OP notes (overheating for simple tasks my machine usually easily muscled), but procrastinated fixing this. An initial lack of any good solutions from a cursory fix-search nudged me in the direction of backtracking to the last OS.

OP's observation of the Airplay Receiver causing the excess energy usage seems to be spot on. 12 hours after turning off the receiver and my battery is lasting way longer with no over-heating. It's remarkable.

I don't know the protocol, but can we get ara194's issue-fix passed on to the OS-update folks?

Mojave to Monterey update.

Recently updated to 12.3.1 on MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018).

It was a smooth update, with no trouble except running much warmer than usual. It never ran hot before.

It ran hot all of the time after the update, even a day after Photos had finished curating 50k photos.

I turned off the Airplay Receiver after reading this post, and my machine cooled off in five minutes.

Those % CPU value are normal Note the % CPU applies to only one core So one process can be over 100% and even 200%.

If problem persists:

Try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may resolve your problem.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

A lot of times just boot to Safe Mode followed by normal boot resolves problems.

If still problem download and run this app so we can find more information about your installation.

https://etrecheck.com/upgrade

It shows what is launched and other information and is very useful in finding causes of problems. After you first launch the app make sure you check Enable full disk access in the box in lower left.

After running the app use the app's feature to paste to clipboard. Then paste it in the text box for a reply in this forum click on the addition text icon. This is because the normal reply text box limits how much you can type.

I may have discovered the culprit.

As I mentioned before I could not use localhost:5000 for web development after the upgrade. I looked up why and discovered it's due to Airplay Receiver using that port. I went ahead and turned off Airplay Receiver (System Preferences --> Sharing) and just like that my macbook has returned to normal temperature.

It's only been an hour so it's not totally clear in my mind yet but the difference before and after turning off Airplay Receiver is big. I will turn Airplay Receiver back on soon to see if the temps also go back up and report back.
