need advice on connecting a macbook pro to a monitor

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro which I want to connect to an ASUS VZ239H-W monitor. The Mac only has thunderbolt ports on it. Can I connect to the monitor with a thunderbolt to hdmi cable? There is a cdmi cable with the monitor but it is made to connect to an hdmi port. Sorry, don't know a lot about this but would appreciate some help.

That is an unremarkable !920 by 1080 display with HDMI 1.4 and VGA inputs.

Your computer does not have an HDMI output, so the Apple solution is the USB-C Digital AV MultiPort Adapter, which provides a HDMI port, a rectangular USB port, and a USB-C charge (input to the computer).

Since your 2018 MBP has four TB3/USB-C ports, a USB-C to HDMI cable would do the job. Belkin, through the Apple Online Store, has a USB-C to (female) HDMI adapter that would accept the existing ASUS HDMI cable. The Belkin can provide resolutions up to 4K@60hz, and though it offers HDMI 2.0, that is backward compatible with the ASUS HDMI 1.4.
