Connect iPad mini 6 (2021) to Macbook Pro 2011 (El Capitan)

Hello,

I'm trying to connect a new iPad mini 6 (2021) to an older Macbook Pro (from 2011) that is running El Capitan OS.

When I connect the iPad using a cable (USB-C on the iPad to USB port on the Macbook), the Macbook does not recognize the iPad. There is no activity at all. The iPad does not display a connection, not even that the battery is charging.

The cable is good (it can charge the iPad when connected to AC, and it allows the connection of other types of devices).

Is it possible that the new iPad mini 6 is not compatible at all with a Macbook Pro 2011? Or is it a port issue? Could I connect the iPad to the Macbook's FireWire or other port?

Thanks, @Matthew_J5. The instructions in the link did not resolve the issue.

I also contacted Apple Support by phone, and they were likewise also not able to resolve the issue.

I suspected that the issue might be port / hardware related after "jiggling" other USB cables connected to the ports, and realized that they caused intermittent connections of the device.

I purchased a small USB-C (female) to USB-A (male) adapter on Amazon, which, fortunately, made for a tighter fit in the port on the MacBook Pro, and this fixed the problem.

It appears that the metal around the USB port on the MacBook maybe have fatigued over time and did not sufficiently "squeeze" the male end of the cables.

Problem solved!

Hello PhilCanada,

Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities.

We understand your iPad mini is not detected by your Mac. Is that right? Your Mac should be able to connect to your MacBook Pro via USB easily.

We've got a great troubleshooting app to start with. Take a look: If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Try the steps there. That will help. Let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers.
