shift command 4 captures and then moves off the screen

Capturing a section of the screen no longer works properly.

Using shift+cmd+4 initially captures OK but the image on the desktop then disappears off the right side of the screen.

On checking Finder there is no record of the screenshot.

In the past I was always able leave the images on screen until I needed them.

I am still running Catalina but whether this makes a difference?

Any help to solve this would be much appreciated.
