Old Apple ID on an Old Device

I'm trying to trade in an old device, but the device is attached to an old Apple ID that has been deleted. I'm trying to erase the device to trade it in, but I the Apple ID has been deleted so I can't log into the device to erase it. What can I do?

After your account is deleted, you can't sign out of iCloud or turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock on your devices. If you forget to sign out, you might not be able to use your device when your account is deleted.

If you are the original owner, contact Apple. Apple might be able to remove the ID  if provided the required paperwork to include the original purchase receipt with the serial number on it.
