Apple TV+ low playback quality

This is an issue I’ve seen reported a few times, but with no real solutions.


To put it simply, playback quality on the Apple TV+ app is absolutely terrible. This is the case on an Apple TV 4K, an iPad, multiple Xbox’s and a PS4 Pro. All (but the iPad) are connected through network cables, not Wi-Fi, with a 100 Mbps fibre line. The connection is not the issue. Other streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube all work perfectly, it’s only Apple TV+.


It used to simply start at low quality, for a few seconds, then start streaming at full quality with no issues for an entire movie. It eventually progressed to starting at terrible quality and staying that way, even getting maybe 30-60 seconds in before starting to buffer and not starting again, giving a “This content is not available at this time” error. Now it just goes straight to the error. I should also not it won’t download movies on an iPad.


I’ve tried resetting the Apple TV 4K, both with and without updating, unplugged it and the router multiple times, uninstalled and reinstalled the app… and nothing. No difference.


None of these issues existed when I first got the Apple TV device in December, but have cropped up and proceeded to get worse over the subsequent weeks.

It seems you're having trouble with Apple TV and we want to help.


Since this is happening on all your devices and apps and you've completed quite a lot of troubleshooting already, it's possible there's an issue with the network connectivity limiting Apple TV traffic. Try making sure you're not using a proxy or VPN that might be interfering on any of these devices.
