Magic keyboard no longer adjusts brightness

I have Apple Thunderbolt Display and keyboard. Mysteriously lost ability to use F1 and F2 to change brightness. Running on late Mini-12 with macOS Catalina 10.15.

any pointers?

keyboard control issue cleared with Restart. Alls well
