Late 2012 iMac as external display

From

MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

macOS Big Sur 11.5.2

To

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

I read a lot of blogs and saw videos and there is a lot of confusion if this combination will work.

Can someone clarify if iMac can be used a display and if so which cable will suit this please?

Thank you.

No sorry. The new M1 MacBook Air does not support using the 2012 iMac as a display in Target Display Mode.

please carefully read > Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support
