In the Finder 'Get Info' 'Open With' has multiple old or dead entries

When I want to change the default app to open a file from the finder window I highlight the file and then use the 'command I' or I can right click the file and choose'Get Info'. In the Get Info screen I can choose the default program to use to open the file. In the list are a bunch of old dead listings. Is there a way to trim the list to only contain latest versions of the app.

I don't know why but it bothers me to see the old app versions listed. In the screen clip below you can see an example. The are three versions of pixelmator pro listed, three versions of Safari, two versions or Chrome, three versions of PDF Expert and so on.

This is an old article but it may still be relevant.
