external disk reformat

My WD Elements external hard drive that I have been using for time machine backups runs out of space when I do a back up since I completely wiped my iMac, reinstalled the operating system, applications and moved select data files bak on. Is there a way to reformat the external hard drive so I can try to backup from a clean external disk?

First open TM preferences and remove the drive for TM then open Disk Utilities, select the WD drive, erase and format. Depending on which OS you have TM will need to be APFS (Monterey) or APFS or Mac OS journaled with GUID partition for earlier OS for mechanical drives..
