MacBook Pro running Big Sur does not read older CDs

I am trying to open a CD of photos from 2001. My MacBook Pro (running Big Sur) will not open it. The CD doesn't show up on the desktop either.

I have the same issue using my MacBook Air (Catalina).

Is there anyway to open and access the photos on the CD?

What reader? If SuperDrive, it must be connected directly to your Mac. A simple passthrough adapter will work. Are the disks dirty or scratched maybe? How old is the drive and does it work on other computers? If not, the drive may be defective. Have you tried a different reader?

Not all Apple SuperDrives will work with all Macs. Definitely try using a good quality/brand third party optical drive.

If @ku4hx suggestions don't work, then you may have a big issue if you do not have backups. CDs you burn do not last forever. They can degrade over time. If they degrade it is highly unlikely you will be able to access the data on the CD. You can try to see whether a professional data recovery service such as Drive Savers or Ontrack can recover any data from the CDs.

You should always have frequent and regular backups of your computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data.
