URL bar not displaying URL address or auto filling

My Safari address bar is no longer filling in common url addresses. It also does not display URL addresses in the bar so I can copy and send links to others. Why did it stop doing this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.14

thanks for the response, I appreciate it. turns out I had to re-boot. when i saw that my tabs had no titles on them i realized i needed to shut down and re boot. that worked for all of the above. auto fill is working in the url bar again, etc.
