I am at disk utility trying to erase my old Mac to sell it. I got directions that said click on Macintosh hd but erase option doesn't come up with that. erase options comes up with disk 1 or OS X base system but it doesn't let me erase

You cannot erase the base system in disk utilities recovery mode. Do you have FileVault enabled? Or any other security?
