Where are my Mac screenshots stored?

Hi,

I took a screenshot on my Mac - it was avail for a few seconds then vanished - was it stored somewhere?

update : silly me I see they are on the desktop - please disregard...

you can use the "shift-command-5" keyboard shortcut to bring up the recording / screenshot controls. then choose "options" and check what the "save to" location is set to.
