How To Change Name Associated With Computer Under Apple ID

My 2017 iMac's screen cracked (don't ask) and I have replaced it with a Late 2014 Mac Mini. I removed the SSD internal to the iMac and installed it in the Mac Mini. Everything is functioning perfectly, but under the Apple ID the name of the computer is still (my name)'s iMac. The Apple ID lists the computer correctly as a Mac Mini, and it has the correct Mac Mini's serial number. Just the name is off. I'd like to change it to (my name)'s Mac Mini. Any way to get that done?

Neither Restart nor Shut Down did anything, but here's what finally did the trick.


  1. Changed the computer name as suggested by FoxFith above (Apple menu > System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name).
  2. Shut the Mac Mini down.
  3. On my MacBook Pro I went to Apple ID and removed the Mac Mini device from the account.
  4. Booted the Mac Mini and signed back in the iCloud.
  5. Once signed into iCloud, the revised computer name for the Mac Mini stuck.
  6. Done!
