iCloud not syncing

I have three laptops, all Mac (one Pro and two Air). I took one of the Airs (running Big Sur) with me on a trip and returned to find that nothing I had done in that time uploaded to the Cloud. And now nothing is downloading, either. Finder just hangs. So now I worry that the wrong things will upload to the cloud and everything will get jumbled; I"m not sure if I should use this computer or another one and if I use another one that hasn't been updated with what was done in my absence, then what? It's a mess.

And yes, I did the thing with signing out and restarting and signing in again. Didn't make a difference.

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina or later) and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete. The photos sync is extremely slow. It could take several days or more for the photos to sync.
