Backing up IPAD to MAC after the iPAD has been used for a long time...

Hi, I have used an iPAD for a long time and want to connect it to my MAC to back up. When I do so, Finder pops up window saying,

Welcome to your new iPAD

Would you like to set up this iPAD as a new iPAD or restore...

(and it gives me two options and these are the ONLY options available to me)

-Set up as a new device

-Restore from this back up [shows some old backups from 2014]

Obviously, I don't want to restore. The question is, if I select the option to 'Set up as a new device' will it WIPE THE CONTENT ON MY IPAD. Obviously, this would be disastrous.

All I want to do is to back up the content from the iPAD to my MAC.

Wondering:

which Mac model and which iPad model you are using

and

which MacOS is installed on your Mac, which iPadOS is installed on your iPad..

(Apple support often suggests updating to the latest compatible OS(s).)
