two finger drag not always recognised

During scrolling a website or a document et cetera using two finger drag on the trackpad, it frequently happens that my mac doesn't recognise the gesture and instead treats it like a one finger drag or not at all. This gets even more pronounced when I press the ctrl button while dragging. I've read some posts about a trackpad issue in monterey, but my particular issue is not mentioned.

Anyone else having issues with this? It's a brand new Macbook Pro 14" 2021 with Monterey 12.4 installed.
