Reset Password Failed

So I just erased this MacBook Air (M1/2021) using Disk Utility and re-installed Big Sur onto it.

During the setup, I made an account for the computer and it hung.

I hard powered it off and turned it back on, and it was at the login screen but not accepting the password.

I tried resetting it through Recovery Mode > Terminal > resetpassword but got this screen:



I then proceeded to reinstall Big Sur again and after it installed and rebooted, it took me back to the login screen with the same user again from the previous install (like it did not wipe it at all).


Any suggestions?


Update: I went into disk utility again and it prompted me to "Repair" and when it rebooted, it said Mac "activated successfully" and now I'm back attempting to reinstall Big Sur after deleting the partitions and trying again. We'll see where it goes.

If you encrypted your Mac’s boot disk with FileVault 2 —

this prevents you from using your Apple ID to reset your password

(since the password is used in FileVault’s encryption). Read this Apple support document for more information about FileVault. see "Turn Off FileVault" Button Grayed Out --… - Apple Community


Reset your login password using your Apple ID


Click the arrow next to “reset it using your Apple ID.” If you don't see an arrow , see the Apple Support article If you can't reset your Mac login password. Enter an Apple ID and password, then click Next. Follow the instructions to reset your login password.
