Mail repeatedly asking for Gmail password

Mail keeps asking for password when trying to download Gmail. Have updated Gmail password; all appears well on the Gmail end using browser interface. I am inputting the password correctly, but to no avail. I do not use Gmail 2 factor security, so special App password should not be required. Computer uses OS X Yosemite, Mail v. 8.0. I have tried suggestions found online already: reboot; delete from keychain. Doing these has not helped. Any help???

  • I went to gmail.com using Safari. Mail should work in the Safari browser. To get mail to work using Apple Mail, in the browser, under manage your google account and security, I set-up two factor authorization AND generated an application specific password for mail on my Mac. I then used that password for my gmail imap and smtp servers.
