If you open the Spotlight 🔍 panel from the menu extras area, and Spotlight is indexing a volume, you will see a progress bar as shown below, but no other informative metrics. The timeframe will be continuously variable on that which is to be indexed as suggested by John Galt.

The particular storage media and the aggregate amount of information being indexed are relevant factors.
