Back to Time Machine fails

I get message that Time Machine backup to my external hard drive failed. How do I fix this? The hard drive is recognized by name in list of drives to back up to.

Hi,

Open Disk Utility > select that drive > run First Aid. This may take a long time to complete. Then try backing up with TM again. If the drive cannot be repaired, erase it and run First Aid again. If it still cannot be repaired, it's time to replace the drive.
