Be sure the SIM card is in its holder correctly. There are 4 possible orientations, but only the one where the notch in the SIM card aligns with the triangular tab in the corner of the carrier, and the card lies flat in the carrier, is the correct one. And note that this may be a different orientation than an older phone.
