Trying to install the most recent update (Monterey 12.4) but I get this message: "Installation Failed: in order to continue installing, you need to be an owner". This has always been my Mac and I have never gotten this message before.

What exact Mac is this?
Have you upgraded the SSD to a third party...(?)
Is your 11.2 your current macOS — the stable release of Big Sur is 11.6.7 I would get current there.
You can try running First Aid
Boot into Internet Recovery (Option Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities> Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.
Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices The best sequence is —
Volume level
Container level
Parent drive

I will give these things a try this weekend. I have Monterey 12.0.1 on my 2020 MacBook Pro M1. I can't upgrade to 12.4 because of the fail message that I have to be an owner (of my own Mac). I don't know what an SSD is but I did not intentionally upgrade to a third party or down load anything that I know of, aside from documents, pictures, etc. I'm not tech savvy - use my Mac for very basic purposes and logging into my work server.

Make sure that you can log onto your iCloud account without issues. When the computer decides you are not the rightful owner, it is a pain. If you have to take it to the Apple store make sure you have proof of ownership.
Did you buy the computer directly from Apple? In other posts here, that kind of error shows up when someone buys a Mac from a reseller or individual.
