Completion of iPhone XS Max backup onto a MacBook Pro

All software has been updated. I followed the directions for backing up all my iPhone data to my MacBook Pro (with encrypt on), but it won't finish. It's not giving me a message saying the last backup was at <date/time>. Instead, the iPhone screen shows a gray bar and the word "Calculating," and it's been like this for several hours. The gray bar isn't getting longer and the embedded word "Calculating" appears stuck!

Is this normal? Is it taking a long time because encryption is slow? Do I need to start over?

Yes, it has taken way too long for a backup. I recommend that you restart your iPhone and your MacBook Pro and try the process again. Allow the whole process to complete. How long will it take? As you know, that depends on the amount of data on your iPhone and the read/write speed of your MacBook Pro. I would set aside no more than 2 hours if you are backing the data up for the first time. Most often, the process should complete under an hour’s time.
