My Safari tabs often delete themselves

My tabs often delete themselves if not assigned to a tab group, and they do not appear in “recently closed tabs”, so they are lost forever. How can I stop this happening?

Hello, fogarty_t. I’m so glad to hear that you have the same problem. I mean that in the nicest possible way :-) I was beginning to think it was a fault on my iPhone, so it is reassuring to learn that someone else is having the same problem.

Missy5937 suggested that downloading iOS 15.06 might help. I did that, and my main tab group has been wiped three times since then, so that hasn’t solved the problem.

Two days ago I downloaded ios 15.06 on my iPad. Until then, I had not had the problem on my iPad, but yesterday the main tab group on my iPad was wiped. So at best iOS doesn’t help, and it is possible it makes things worse.

it seems to me that there is a bug somewhere in the tab group system that is responsible for this. Does anyone from apple read these posts to learn about recurring problems?

As for opening links in other sources, I have found t,hat, since the tab group system was introduced, clicking on the link often (but not always) takes me to the last tab I looked at. If I then go back to the source and click again on the link, it (always, up to now) works. So that is a minor issue, but also something that apple should fix.

Hello 1ssmith,

Thank you for your questions.

I have iOS 15.5. The problem only began after the latest update and only after I started using tab groups.

I cannot replicate the issue. It happens when I am in Safari, and I see it happening, but each time it has happened I have not been aware of anything that I have done to trigger it.

Up to now, it has only affected the tabs in Safari that have not been allocated to a group, in other words those in the collection identified as “n tabs”, where “n” is the number of tabs.

The first time it happened I had a lot of tabs open - over 100. Since then I have generally tried to transfer most tabs that I want to keep to tab groups, so only à few tabs have been affected. I think on one occasion there were 6, another time 2.

What is particularly annoying is that the lost tabs do not appear in my history, so, unless I remember what they were, I cannot recover them.

There is no error message. I am simply left each time with no tabs in the collection of tabs that have not been allocated to a group, and the identification “Start page” instead of “n tabs”. It changes to “1 tab” once there is an open tab.

Thanks for any advice that you can give.

Hi, I am having this problem, too, and wrote a post on these support forums a few months ago and didn’t receive any reply. I can’t find my post now. It is still happening to me on my iPhone, without private browsing on. Most often, it happens when I last had Safari open to a tab group, and then try to click a link from an iMessage or email or website, and instead of the page opening in the main tab group (the default one, not a named tab group), it tries to open and doesn’t (safari opens but it goes to the last tab group without opening the link I’ve just clicked on, and then when I open Safari again to open the main tab group, all the tabs in that group are gone. The tabs in the other groups remain. It happens less often if I remember to go to safari and leave it open to a page on the main tab group before clicking any outside links. It also sometimes happens if I close safari out altogether.

unlike the first post on this thread, I can find my lost pages in history. Not receiving any error messages. It seems to have started after the last big software update, sometime in April or May, I think.

I'm running the latest iOS on an iPhone 8+ with plenty of memory available. I have about 5 tab groups apart from the main one, with about 10 tabs each. Hope this post might help diagnose it if the same problem is happening to you or others.

Hello timinbru,

It might be helpful if you check to make sure your iOS is fully updated. Many times fixes for issues that appear in iOS are resolved with an update. The article below will assist you with not only installing iOS 15.6 but in how to create a backup before starting the update process.

Greetings timinbru,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We see that you have not received a reply to your question yet.

Which specific software version?

Are you able to replicate this issue? If so, which specific steps to you take to do so?

How many tabs are currently open? Are you receiving an error of any kind?

The more detail you can provide, the better the chances of receiving a reply.

Cheers.
