If you are sharing an Apple ID with someone else, then you will be sharing your data and etc with that person as well. Accounts Cannot be Merged:

Creating a new Apple ID is what would be created --not an iTunes account. And, yes, it is a way to go about this. Just know that accounts cannot be merged. So, you'll have to purchase your own items, from your own Apple ID.
