Updating from El Capitan 10.11.6

I have a Mac Book Pro (late 2012) running El Capitan 10.11.6. I want to update the OS but when I click on software update, no options appear to be available to me. Is my Mac too old to update or is there an option for me?

Did you check the hardware compatibility for higher macOS versions?

On my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 I was able to install Catalina macOS 10.15

But keep in mind, that not all 3rd software is supported by Catalina.
