Can’t install Reinstall Mac OS Mountain Lion and can’t erase disk.

When I attempt to reinstall Mac OS Mountain Lion it says it can’t find a disk or a disk won’t show up. When I go to disk utility it only shows disk 0 and Mac OS base system. But it won’t let me erase anything. I see no disk with nothing bigger than 1 gb and my Mac is 526 GB Storage. How do I get a disk to show up to reinstall the Mac OS system.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Hey 238STRADA238,

Thanks for the additional information that the Mac is starting up to a folder. You'll want to follow this resource for guidance: If a flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac. It has some great steps like resetting the NVRAM and repairing the disk.

You can always learn more about startup screens you might see when a Mac is not starting up properly here: If your Mac doesn't start up all the way.

Cheers.

Hi 238STRADA238,

It sounds like you're having some trouble with reinstalling macOS on your Mac and we want to help.

Which Mac do you have?

If Disk Utility doesn't recognize your disk, it might be that the disk has failed. Does the Mac start up otherwise?

Let us know about what's happening and we'll help.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Does this laptop have a third party SSD installed? If so, then you will need to boot into macOS 10.13+ since older versions of macOS don't have the necessary NVMe SSD driver to communicate with a third party SSD.

If the laptop is using an original Apple OEM SSD, then that SSD has most likely failed if you don't see it as the top most item on the left pane of Disk Utility (usually called something like "Apple SSD....").
