Setting Key Photo for the YEAR, MONTH or DATE in Photos (Mac 12.3)

I like how Photos curates photos in the Photo Library by year, Month and Date automatically when you import photos. However the key phot selected is not always the "best" or "most desired" photo. How do I set the key photo for these groupings? Photos seems to just select random photos and I don't always want the photo that Photos selects to be set as the key photo for these automated groupings.

I tried selecting Image>Make Key Photo but this option is faded out and does not let me set the key photo.

The key photos for years, months and days can't be set by the user. Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Feedback - Photos - Apple
