Is my 2012 original Ipad dead? How can I resuscitate it?

I have an original 2012 Ipad that I have not used in about 2 years. I charged it and tried to start it up. It takes a charge and turns on but only displays an itunes icon and a white charger plug icon. What does this mean? I mainly want to obtain the photos that may be sitting on this old device. I do not use other apple devices.

iPad, iOS 9

You are seeing the connect to iTunes on a computer message. Your iPad needs to be restored. If you do this, you can get the iPad working again, but it will also erase everything on the device. If you have a backup that you can restore, you may be able to save the photos.
