Hi Ladydi617,

Welcome to your new MacBook Air!

Unfortunately, you can't move your iPhone content directly to your Mac. Typically, a Mac syncs content into an iPhone, not the other way around. That said, here's some tips that can help with setting up your Mac.

When you power on your Mac for the first time, it should start up to a screen displaying "Hello" in multiple languages, followed by the Setup Assistant. In the Setup Assistant, you should be given the option to sign in with your Apple ID and password after completing a few steps, such as connecting to Wi-Fi. Use the same Apple ID and password that you use on your iPhone; this will ensure that your contacts and other iCloud data are synced onto your Mac. (This doesn't include iCloud Backups.)

Once you've signed in with your Apple ID, you should be prompted to create the first computer account on your Mac. This account stores all of your files and settings on your Mac, and is different than your Apple ID. To make things easy, I recommend using your full name in the Full Name field, and your first name in the Account Name field. For your password, choose a password that is easy to remember, but different than your Apple ID password. Think of it as a "passcode" for your Mac, similar to how your iPhone has a passcode on it.

If you are later prompted to enable FileVault, choose whether you want to do this or not. If FileVault is enabled, it makes it impossible for thieves to physically steal your Mac's data without your login password. However, it can also make it difficult to reset your password if you forget it. If you choose to enable FileVault, be sure to allow your iCloud account to reset your password.

Once you've completed the rest of the Setup Assistant, you should be brought to the desktop. At this point, take a look around and start customizing!

  • The Dock is where you can put your most frequently used apps. It's at the bottom of the screen by default.

  • The Finder is where all of your files are stored on your Mac. It's the blue and white smiley icon at the left-most side of the Dock, at the bottom of the screen.

  • To change most of your Mac's settings, head to System Preferences. It's the "gears" app on the Dock at the bottom of the screen. You can also access System Preferences by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left corner, and selecting System Preferences.

  • To download your desired apps, try these steps:

    • First, try searching for the app in the App Store. You can access the App Store from the Dock, or by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left corner. Most apps won't be available in the App Store on Mac, but it's worth checking anyways.

    • If the app doesn't appear in the App Store, try searching for the app in Safari. The app developer should have a website where you should be able to download the app (if available) onto your Mac. Downloaded apps will appear in the Downloads folder on your Dock (or in the Finder). They will either be inside a disk image (.dmg file) or an installer package (.pkg file). If you get a disk image, double-click to open it, then drag the app inside into the Applications folder that appears. If you get a package file, double-click on it to start the installation process.

  • To open an app, click the Launchpad icon on the Dock, or open the Finder and select the Applications folder in the left sidebar. That said, I usually just open the Finder and drag the Applications folder onto the Dock, next to the Downloads folder. That way, apps are easily accessible :)

  • To completely close an app, click on the app, then press Command-Q to quit the app. Or, click on its name at the top of the screen and select Quit.

  • Most apps have settings of their own that can be customized. To change an app's settings, open the app, then go to the top of the screen and click on the app's name. Choose Preferences from the list.
