Hi,
My phone went into the apple logo loop. It was suggested that I enter recovery mode and update the phone. Once it updated, a white screen with 'press home to recover' has come up. I am just wondering if this will preserve my photos as I have not yet backed them up.

No there is no data on your phone as it was in recovery mode. If you didn't back up to icloud, then hopefully you synced them to the cloud, if you did sign back in and turn on photos if not it's gone.
